This year’s J’Ouvert celebration in Brooklyn was a breathtaking showcase of culture, creativity, and community spirit. Organized by J’Ouvert City International, the event drew thousands of revelers, filling the streets with music, color, and joy. J’Ouvert continues to honor Caribbean heritage and the freedom to express one’s identity through mas, steelpan, and dance. The energy and excitement of the day were palpable, blending traditional and modern elements to create a celebration like no other.

Steel Pan Band Winners
Steelpan music is a cornerstone of J’Ouvert celebrations. This year several standout bands showcased their talent. Here are this year’s Steel Pan Band winners.

Curtis Noel stunned the audience with his commanding portrayal of Chongwe, an African-inspired warrior figure.
- Queen: Janet Lewis (2 J & Friends) – Portrayal: Bride – Points: 240
Janet Lewis’ portrayal of a regal bride during “Dis Weddin Sweet” earned her a well-deserved first place in the Fancy Ole Mas Queen category.

- King: Ronnie Whiteman (Kutters)
Portrayal: Initiation Shrine – Points: 190
Ronnie Whiteman’s portrayal of an initiation shrine was steeped in tradition and craftsmanship, embodying the spirit of J’Ouvert. - Queen: Deborah Blackman (Kutters)
Portrayal: Mother of the Universe – Points: 165
Deborah Blackman took the title with her powerful portrayal of “Mother of the Universe,” showcasing stunning detail and cultural depth.
Flagwaving
- 1st Place: Ann Cambridge (King Jab & Friends) – Points: 275
